We stopped at the Dairy Mart in Glidden, Iowa, for ice cream cones. We were greeted by Cierra Steinbach (right) and Meredith Grossman.

Darrell (right) and Rosie Crouse (center), with their friend Mark Henderson. Mark had been keeping track of our travels, and thought that perhaps, since the Lincoln Highway goes through their town of Boone, we might want to visit the Crouses and their collections.

25. We stopped in Glidden, Iowa, for lunch at the Dairy Mart, where we ordered burgers with fries and ice cream cones for dessert. And we had a good time talking with our servers, two Iowa girls named Cierra Steinbach and Meredith Grossman, about their futures.

Cierra had worked at Dairy Mart for five years and was a sophomore at the Des Moines Area Community College, where she was majoring in business. Meredith was a senior at Glidden High School and would be a freshman at the University of Northern Iowa in September.

On hot days, Cierra said she sells mostly ice cream, especially when the Dairy Mart features lemon, their favorite flavor. On cooler days, customers order more hot food.

“I have no idea what I want to do after school,” Cierra said. “I’m only twenty—am I supposed to know by now?” That’s the eternal question asked by every college student.

I asked her whether anybody famous ever came into the Dairy Mart.

“Well, the basketball players from Iowa State come in when they pass by,” she said. “And Governor Terry Branstad used to come in until he came down with diabetes.”

On the bulletin board next to the door were posted a couple of flyers for upcoming events, including such cultural events as a polka festival and a demolition derby.
